At the same time I was commissioned
to do Many Years Together, my client
requested this portrait of her
husband's favorite dog, Smokey, who
had passed away some years before. I
can't tell you how intimidated I was
to paint all that fur! I had no clue, no
experience with animal portraiture at
all. I decided to do it as I would any
other portrait - paint it upside down.
I do this to help me forget I'm
painting a face and concentrate on
the shapes and colors within the
image. I knew I had done well when I
had the pictures I took of the painting
developed and the guy at the counter
asked if it was a picture of my dog ...
he thought it was a real dog! He
didn't believe me when I said it was a
painting. The client also told me it
brought tears to her husband's eyes
when he saw it.
