I created this commission from part of
a photograph the client had taken on a
trip to Europe with her husband and
family. It was meant to be an
anniversary present for her husband. I
was pleased with the results and
scheduled a meeting with the client for
delivery. You can't imagine my
surprise when she told me, "It's not
dirty enough." I was stumped. I asked
what she meant. She told me Venice is
a very dirt place, the canals are
littered with trash and smell terrible.
She advised only going in the coldest
times of the year to make the smell
bearable. I was shocked! But, I took
the painting home and "dirtied it up"
but adding smudges of graphite and
dirty paint water to different areas.
She loved it!
