Clytia
Acrylic on canvas, 16" x 20"
In Greek mythology, Clytia was an
ocean nymph who fell in love with
Apollo, God of the Sun. Jealous of
Apollo's love for Leucothoe, she
betrayed them to Leucothoe's father.
In anger, Leucothoe's father buried
her alive. The saddened Apollo turned
away from Clytia, and languished in
sorrow and regret, she died. After her
death she changed into the heliotrope
or sunflower, which, traditionally,
still turns to the sun, following the sun
god through his daily course.
